SELF-CLEANING BOXES Some owners with large numbers of cats and absolutely no time to scoop may think these boxes are a time-saver, but they can really be a curse. The electronic boxes may deter cats from entering if they approach while the motor and rake are still cleaning up from a previous cat’s visit. I also find the actual litter surface areas of the electronic boxes to be too small. The box itself seems large, but that’s just because it has to house the motor and the soiled litter receptacle. The rake can also get stuck if the litter clump is exceptionally large. The rake may also get stuck on large clumps of diarrhea as well.
The electronic box deprives the cat owner of a very valuable diagnostic tool—the ability to monitor what is or isn’t happening in the litter box. Often the first sign of a potential medical problem is detected by an owner’s observation of a change in litter box habits. Noticing an especially hard stool, diarrhea, blood, or mucus, or even parasites in the waste is a valuable red-flag warning. The electronic box prevents you from having that important early warning system.
As for manual self-cleaning boxes—oh boy, are they a waste of time! You’ll spend just as much time flipping them over and emptying receptacles as you would if you’d just scoop with a shovel. These boxes also have to be scrubbed, so you’ll end up washing the top, the grate, the bottom, and the receptacle. The self-cleaning boxes are also covered, and that adds an extra negative in my book. And as with the electronic box, the actual litter surface size is really quite small in comparison to a regular litter box. In a multicat home, small just doesn’t cut it.
There are also some very strange self-cleaning boxes that use an automatic whoosh of liquid to clean the permanent substrate so you supposedly never have to change the litter. If the cat happens to be in the box while the cleaning takes place, he ends up with wet paws. Now that’s a litter box aversion problem waiting to happen!
